Assignment 1 : Self Portrait

Through my work, my self-portrait I'd like to portray simplicity+complication. This assignment is assigned in class and to be done within the campus and using materials we could find around campus, come out with a self-portrait based on any one art movement. But due to the time constraint as we have another class, we did it back home. Since I had found flowers in the campus I decided to stick with it as the whole idea is to portray a time-constrained work but still conveys the same meaning.

The art movement I've chose to go with is Realism. I personally feel that realism art is the one art movement that I could connect with. Its any piece of art based on realism I could feel this strange peculiar feeling towards it. Its so interesting, and tells so much.

Here, I've used materials like dried flowers I found from the parking grounds of Taylors University, leopard print straps that I actually cut off my spoilt platform heels, aluminium foils and poster colours. In a glance the colour of the poster colours might look like its a volcano as its red and yellow signifies the lava, but the whole thing is actually a tree. I've chose to relate myself to a tree because of how strong a tree looks like, and that flowering trees actually symbolises the all of the ideas I have in my head blooming, but in the end dies away because of lack motivation or a platform to enhance and voice out the ideas, whether verbally or non-verbally. Though as strong as a tree can look, it still needs water, sunshine and care to be able to grow nicely. And as tough or fierce as I look, hence the leopard print for my face without any other facial features and a touch of purple plastic heart shape for my lips to tell that I am/could be a hopeless romantic deep down. I've substituted the leaves of a tree as my long long locks, and the flowers descending into a sea of blue. The red and yellow are actually fire in the tree trunk that tells how much of a fighter filled with burning passion but when it rises up to the top, everything dies.. Its a vicious cycle of my mind.
